Everyday Mexico
Scenes from Daily Life Across Mexico
Everyday Mexico
I want to present a photoseries that documents different elements of life across Mexico. These images focus on better understanding Mexico as both a country and a people— diverse, objective, curious, serious and fun. These photos were all taken after I moved to Mexico in November 2020 and document my experiences interacting with this fascinating country.
A Stroll After the Rain
Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico. January 2021.
As the sun begins to set and the sky clears in Taxco, a former silver mining town in the northeastern corner of Guerrero, a couple walks along a lit cobblestone street. Taxco is a beautiful reminder of days past, with narrow, ageing cathedrals, a taxi fleet of old white beetles, and clothes strung on lines outside people’s windows.
Clowning Around in Oaxaca
Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico. December 2020.
A street performer with a microphone tied around his neck with balloons gets ready to begin his routine in the zócalo in central Oaxaca. Behind him, students read a book while their mothers, native clothing and handicraft sellers, look on while watching their youngest daughters.
Making Tortillas on an Open Fire
Zinacantán, Chiapas, Mexico. December 2020.
A woman from a collective in the town of Zinacantán prepares fresh tortillas on the fire in their shared kitchen. Here, women live and raise their children together while earning an income through cooking and seamstressing.
Christmas Music
Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico. December 2020.
A blind husband and wife stand outside a well-decorated Oaxaca establishment playing the accordion and singing Christmas songs.
The Lone Mariachi
Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. November 2020.
In Mexico’s second-largest city Guadalajara there exists a small neighbourhood called Mariachi Street. And you guessed it, many mariachis gather here to play music and entertain cafe patrons for tips. When Mexican’s talk about Jalisco, they commonly say it’s home to every Mexican stereotype. And there’s little doubt why the state slogan is “Jalisco is Mexico.” Here, one Mariachi band member practices while his colleagues take a rest at a cafe.
Candy Family
Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico. December 2020.
A mother and her young son sell candy on the pedestrian street in central Oaxaca.
