SUBSISTENCE FISHING COMMUNITIES ON THE ARABIAN SEA

Al Mahrah, Yemen. 2021.

Located near Yemen’s border with Oman, the Mahrah Governorate is a remote coastal region on the Arabian Sea. This region is the traditional homeland of the seafaring Mehri and Dhofari people.

They are descendants of ancient South Arabians who have inhabited this region for thousands of years. Over time, migration from Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa, and other parts of Arabia and the Indian Subcontinent helped transform this coastal region, adding new cultural elements.

Today, the people who live along the Mehri coast are mostly dependent on fishing for their livelihoods. The region is remote, yet is stunningly beautiful, with turquoise waters, incredible white sand beaches, rocky overlooks, unique endemic flora and fauna, and small stone fishing villages.
